Repaying a chargeback from a negative balance

Hey,

So recently i sold an item online and didnt gather enough proof of the buyer purchasing the item, resulting in me not being able to fight the chargeback claim he sent towards me. This left me with a balance of -£23.86. I payed back the money with my card leaving me with a paypal balance of £0.00 When i then tried to repay the money it said that i didnt have enough funds to do so.

How am I supposed to close the case?

What happens if I leave the dispute, will it automatically send the money to the buyer?

Once you have paid your negative balance, you don't need to do anything else further. You certainly don't need to "refund" your buyer, unless you want to pay twice.

When dispute/chargeback happens, PayPal makes a deduction of the amount from your balance, if you have none available, and a negative balance appears, you just pay that back (because PayPal already paid the refund to the bank who refunded the buyer) so you just owe PayPal and once you zero out the negative balance with PayPal, you're squared off.

Kudos & Solved are greatly appreciated. 🙂

Oh okay thank you, also when will the chargeback appeal be removed from my paypal? Will it just clear once the deadline to reply is reached or just when paypal fully processes the transaction?

Hi @KianFloyde,

Thank you for your questions!

The chargeback case will remain open throughout the whole process. Since a chargeback involves the card issuer, it can take a while to close. Once closed, you won't see it in the open cases view any longer.

I hope this helps!
