Possible spam/phishing?

I was approached on instagram messaging by someone who wanted to purchase my art work. He was trying to PayPal the money,  but said I would receive a security code on my mobile phone which he needed to enter in to verify his account. He said he had a lenoir account and could only do direct transfer,  could not fi to my website and use a credit card, nor could he pay through invoice. I never received any code. Is this legit? Or do you know of a scam like this.  What would be accomplished with this scam?
