Hello @AuslandJim

Welcome to the PayPal Community Forum! I can certainly understand why you'd want to check the legitimacy of certain emails or other notifications you receive claiming to be PayPal. You can find information on How to spot a fake, fraudulent, or phishing PayPal email or website here.

If your account has been limited and you're being asked to confirm certain pieces of information, you can normally complete those requests in our Resolution Center or by contacting our Customer Support teams.

I hope that helps!

Hello @barkingDogma,

Welcome to PayPal Community Forum and thank you for posting!

I understand that you are worried about the notification that you have received. To verify if the email notification you received is really from PayPal, log in to your PayPal account securely by typing www.paypal.com into your browser's address bar and going to your Resolution Center. Your Resolution Center will contain information on any account issues we may have contacted you about. If the Resolution Center tends to contain the same notification as you have received, you can submit the required details.

If it seems to be a suspicious email, text message, or call, do not provide your personal or financial information, and do not click on any links, please forward them to phishing@paypal.com. If you provided personal or financial information, please change your PayPal password and security questions at your earliest convenience. You may want to first run a virus scan, just to make sure that you didn't pick something up from clicking any links. You can also read more about how to spot fake emails in this help center article.

Good Luck,

Ayesha

Hey @Usertoday,

I do understand your concern here. Customers will be required to provide tax information like their Taxpayer Identification Number which could be an Employer Identification Number (EIN), Tax File Number or an Individual Tax File Number if they haven't already provided it when they approach certain thresholds. We may email the customers to submit the requested information. You can check the validity of the email by reviewing the notifications bar in your PayPal account as any alerts requesting information can be found there. You can also reach out to our team through the available contact options at the bottom of PayPal page or message us though Facebook/Twitter for any additional assistance.

Hope this information helps,

Bindu

Hi Bindu, My wife received the same email requesting confirmation of tax residency. It looks legit (and may actually be legit), but if it is, PayPal should also include the same message in the Message Center, which is a more trustworthy place to communicate to customers. Phishing scammers are getting much more crafty, so legit business comms need to be very careful to not set bad precedence by doing things the way scammers might. Since this message is not in my wife's PayPal Account Message Center, I've advised her to delete the email. If this is a legit request, please pass this message back to the comms team. Regards Adam

Think you’ve received a phishing email? Forward it to phishing@paypal.com.au

Received the same email, if it’s legitimate then it’s a very silly move by PayPal. In this day and age if scams it should never encourage a sign on by a link.

Paypal shouldn't be asking for Australian users' Tax File Numbers anyway. Only employers, banks, and the Tax Office can ask for this

The email from PayPal asking about tax residency status, from a PayPal email address with an au domain is legitimate. But, shame on Paypal for its ambiguous answers to this question in the forum, and for not sending a message to users that can be read in the App. It was only when I logged onto PayPal on the web that I saw the message asking for tax residency status.

I Received it as well hence I reached out to PP. However, they are claiming that it is NOT from them. Below is the reply from them:

"Thank you for sending the link. I can confirm this notification is invalid because PayPal is US based company and not an Australian one.

Kindly please disregard this notification because no pending verification is needed from your side. I'm sorry for any confusion this has caused you, but I appreciate your patience and understanding on this".
