I can't remove an old phone number from my phone number list, the remove function is not avaiable

I logged in to change my email address which was easy enough, followed the instructions and voila, all done. Then while in my profile, there was an old phone number (my old work number, I've since retired and that number is no longer valid). I tried to remove it, but the remove button only removes the number at the top of the list, which of course, is not the one i want to remove. I used the PayPal Assistant, which seemed to work, but after logging out and back in, it's still there. I was looking at another chain about this same problem, but can't seem to get back to that page. What's the nonsense about having to add another number? I already have 4, simply want to remove 2 of them, a duplicate and a non existent number, geez what a pain.
