scam or not?

I have an item posted on craigslist. I got a reply that they want it site unseen. He wants my paypal account name to make the payment. I've never received money via paypal. So was wondering if it can hurt to send him my account name or is there another way around this?

You have next to no protection in transactions off of ebay.  With that said it is only a guess but I would say yes, it's a scam.  Most of the e-mails will state they are perfectly fine with the condition of the item without seeing it.  Some claim to send an agent to pick the item up while others just use stolen PP accounts to fund the transaction.  They also commonly use the term "secure" and how "secure PayPal is" in correspondence.

Non-eBay payments qualify for PayPal seller protection as long as they satisfy all eligibility requirements. Click on the following link to read the PayPal Seller Protection Policy requirements...

After receiving a "PayPal payment received" email message, ALWAYS log in to your PayPal account using your saved bookmark or by typing the https://www.paypal.com address in your browser's address bar. Do not click on links in the email message... those links may direct you to a spoof site which is wanting to steal your PayPal password and/or download viruses, keyloggers, etc.

He wants the Paypal account email so he can fake a convincing payment notice that tells you the money is in Paypal but won't be credited until you login to a link he provides and put a tracking number in.

It's a total scam, done all the time on Craigslist - run away.
