Is there an advantage of charging a dollar versus nothing for free trial? If I charge nothing will paypal still be able to tell if the credit card is good when the 30 day point comes to start charging the card?

No advantage other than the fact that you now not offering a Free Trial. The customer still has to sign up for the service, the credit card info is retained and the customer is not billed until the Trial Period has ended.

If there is no payment involved in the free trial and paypal gets the card information but does not charge anything initially will they still know if the card is good as if they did take out a dollar?

If the customer's card is bad, they won't be able to sign up. They get a pre-authorization, that way they know the card is good and funds are reserved but, not actutally charged until the trial is up.
