BIG problem getting a promised refund for misrepresented item.

Hi,

 

I am trying to create a dispute on here before it's too late.  I returned the product to the seller by certified mail and it was received on Dec. 5th.  I put in a request to him for the money and he cancelled it.  Now I thought I had opened a case with PayPal but when I went to pending disputes it said that I didn't have any.  I feel as if I've followed every step from PayPal but I can't understand why I don't have an open dispute.  I've tried contacting them directly and they are pretty useless and have never responded.  My big concern is that I will lose my date to file the dispute if PayPal does this wrong.  Anyway, has anyone else had this problem and come up with a resolution?
