I have paid someone and it says my payment is pending. Anyone know what is going on? why does it say pending and how long will it take for payment to show up on the recipients paypal

pending echeque? Is there a clearance date? 
pending TO a company? Does it say awaiting authorisation?
pending / unclaimed to the seller?
pending / unclaimed with a cancel option to the seller?
