Setting up an "unofficial" fundraiser for a group gift?

We are friends collecting money to buy a struggling author a computer. It's fundraising-between-friends, not a formal charity, and will only last about a month.

We have paypal accts, but we are not an official group in any capacity.

We have received numerous pledges, but need a place to collect the money:
* Do we need a new, separate paypal acct, or can it somehow be temporarily attached to an existing acct with a separate designation?

* Can we use a "donate" button if we're not a charity/nonprofit?

* Is there a way to put a donate button on a message board and/or Twitter (as well as facebook or a personal website)?

Donations will be domestic and international, if that matters.

Any advice is appreciated!

You might as well forget it!  I've had nothing but TROUBLE, TROUBLE, TROUBLE trying to get this done.  PP is making something simple an impossibility!

Hi imbatnan,

Good to see you here in our community!

You don't have to be a formal organization to accept donations through PayPal.

To learn more about how to do it and what tools we offer check out https://paypal.com/fundraising

HI

I am fundraising for a hip surgery I will need. I need to raise 40K. If everyone pays through paypal, how do I get paid?

These are gifts adn I don't want to pay taxes on gifts. Does Pay Pal consider this income and send me 1099?
