What's the difference between placing a hold through my credit card company or PayPal?

Hi, I live in the US purchased some very bulky items from a Seller that lives in Singapore, outside of eBay. Because of the physical size of the items and Chinese New Year, it is taking longer for the items to be shipped. I do not suspect there will be a problem, but want to place a hold on the funds so that my dispute window of 30 days does not expire prior to receipt and being sure that the items function properly. It has been just over a week since I paid and I was told yesterday that the items would not ship until late next week. What are the Pros and Cons between disputing with my credit card company or directly through PayPal? Is it the same? Which is recommended to ensure me the most protection while being fair to the seller? Thank you, Don
