I've been looking at an item on craigslist, but it's in another state, and it would have to be shipped. I haven't approached the seller yet, because i'm not sure how to do this without coming across as a scammer (trust me, I'm not). What is common procedure for buying an item, and how do i qualify for buyer protection?
I've also seen payments being "held" untill the item arrives, is that something that is based on the amount of money involved, or is that an option?
sorry if this is in the wrong category.

The seller should send you a Request for Money or an email Invoice.
As for Protection for Buyers, this policy is explained in the User Agreement.
This link explains the "hold" policy. It's basically for folks who sell, not buyers.

The "hold" you've heard about is usually part of a scam because the escrow company used is fake.
Don't go that route.
