unauthorised closure of a return case

Hi, i recently had a return case open in which i did everything paypal asked of me. i returned the dodgy goods for a refund and provided tracking. while i was on the incredibly useless automated answer service trying to speak to a uk rep a message came on saying case is now closed.  it appeared that i for some reason had closed the case- i hadn't.  now-  9 phone calls later trying to resolve this i have no funds and no goods. the seller is absolutely ecstatic and wont even acknowledge the goods have been sent back(tracking provided as proof) paypal keep answering every mail with-" you closed the case"- i respond-no i did not close the case-why would i with no refund??  lost faith in paypal and really do not know what to do.... any thoughts/ideas- and yes i know about chargeback but that means the seller gets away with it...
