Wrong item sent ...😑😑😑

I paid Β£40 for gold earrings and agreed on Β£5 to cover postage ...total money paid through PayPal Β£45.

i received package and it contained silver chain not gold earrings, had a message from seller saying he sent wrong item out and to send back - he would send me money through PayPal to return the chain, this was the week before Christmas, I sent numerous messages asking for an address to return to, and for money to cover postage, so I opened a dispute through PayPal.

he has at last acknowledged me and has supplied a return address but has now said I should pay the postage and that he did in fact send gold earrings and not a chain.... I can’t find a way to add screen shots of our conversation to the dispute messages, and I’m loath to pay return postage .... what do I do now please ?

Paypal state this >>
PayPal is not obliged to reimburse you for any costs that you incur to comply with any of PayPal’s requests for cooperation for the purpose of resolving the problem (including, without limitation, costs that you incur to return a SNAD item to the Payment Recipient or another party as PayPal requests), although sometimes it may reimburse these costs.

Although they will compensate you for some of the cost if you have activated this at some point before you made that transaction .....

If you buy from a business in the UK then you can normally recover those return costs via the small claims court although most UK businesses would reimburse you anyway. (BUT if you choose to buy from a private or international seller you may not have that option even though the fault is not yours).
You also have the option to do a chargeback via your card issuer instead of a Paypal dispute if you funded your Paypal payment via a credit card.

Thank you for your help ...

the seller has now opened a case against myself ... so do I now send the chain back ? After which I give PayPal proof of postage or do I wait now to see what PayPal has to say ?

Thank you

You only return an item when paypal have said they have found in your favour and tell you to do so.

That's the sellers fault, you ordered earings, not a necklace, why should you have to go through all the stress of sending a item back and pay postage,I'm going through the same scenario,I ordered a garden hose, and received a car snorkel for a 4 wheel drive, the seller is in the wrong,it comes under PayPal protection, get a ticket off PayPal for postage,it's not up to you to pay postage for a item you never purchased which dosent match the description, contact PayPal and ask them to step in
