Why is Paypal asking for my SSN 20 years after my account was opened?

Is it the buyers I've sent money to recently that is creating a flag? My account has never done anything suspicious and has always been in good standing.
I'm not interested in giving Paypal my SSN, so if there is a way to stay off Paypal's radar for this so that I don't have to close my Paypal account, I'd like to know. If I have to close my account, I guess I understand why crypto is starting to take off.

Paypal has tightened up security a lot in recent years, if you want to continue receiving funds you would need to complete any requested i.d. requirements.
