What protection is there against scams?

I bought some wigs from China and when I wanted to return them I then reviews saying people had returned them and not been refunded and that it was a scam. They didn’t send an invoice and yet asked if proof of purchase would be sent. Also it is expensive to return a big parcel to China so I filed a dispute instead with “not as described” as the videos of the wigs looked amazing. I just was worried about spending more money on top of £82 then them finding some reason they couldn’t refund me like saying the wigs were damaged or they hadn’t received them back etc. How can PayPal protect you from scams? They could just reply saying the wigs are as described (as maybe a video isn’t the same as a description) and how do you prove they aren’t as good as described. Can PayPal find out if a company is genuine?
