Why does PayPal need my social security number now all of a sudden? I’m not comfortable with giving that out. Now I’m being told I can’t use PayPal if they don’t have my SSN.
It sounds like you've been using PayPal for awhile and you've reached a point where PayPal is required to verify your identity. Eventually, with enough use, every PayPal user must verify their identity.
