You can open a dispute up to 180 days post payment BUT paypal does not offer a warranty service so a lot would depend on how long after you bought it that the fault occured and type of fault etc.

Thanks for that. The item was ok when it arrived but after about 2 weeks developed a fault. Can I still make a claim in these circumstances?

Hi @Grahamb99!

In this scenario, you would need to contact directly the seller. As mentioned before, under our PayPal Buyer Protection Policy, we do not cover the warranty.

I hope this helps.

The error occurred when I tried to save data to the unit. I therefore think it was faulty from the outset.

Why don't you just open a dispute > provide as much info as possible and see if paypal finds in your favour?

How do I open a dispute with a seller when a purchase goes wrong?

You can open a dispute in the Resolution Centre of your PayPal account within 180 days of payment if:
•You don’t receive the item
•You receive an item but it’s significantly different than the description on eBay or on the seller’s website

By opening a dispute, you can communicate directly with your seller to work out a problem transaction.

If you reach an agreement with the seller you can close the dispute. If you're still not happy with the result, you can escalate the dispute into a claim. We'll review the claim and decide on reimbursement.

These steps apply to Personal accounts. If you have a Business account, please log in to see the steps that apply to you.

To open a dispute:
1.Log in to your PayPal account.
2. Click on the transaction and use the resolve a problem option at the bottom of that details page.

Note:
•Generally buyers must wait at least 7 days from the date of payment to escalate a dispute for an item not received
•Where an item has not been received, please ensure you have given the seller enough time before opening a dispute

https://www.paypal.com/webapps/mpp/first-dispute

DO NOT CLOSE THE DISPUTE UNTIL YOU HAVE A CLEARED REFUND OR YOUR ITEM WHATEVER THE SELLER SAYS. ALSO DON'T FORGET TO ESCALATE THE DISPUTE TO A CLAIM WITHIN 20 DAYS IF THE SELLER DOES NOT REFUND.

If that does not work then if you funded your paypal payment via a card then contact your card issuer and see if they will do a chargeback for you.

I have opened a dispute with the seller. He has offered to refund the amount I paid less postage costs if I return the unit. The problem with this is that I could return the unit and not get my money!! Is there a way of securing my position? Thanks Graham

DO NOTclose the dispute.

Send the item back TRACKABLE to prove delivery of the item back to the seller and if no refund ESCALATE the dispute to a claim.

If for any reason the item won't get their before the 20 days post opening the dispute is up then ESCALATE on day 19 so you still have that option.

The seller has made an offer via PayPal to refund me less postage costs if I return the goods.

Should I accept this offer or just send the goods back tracked etc?

If I accept the offer on PayPal I assume this will not close the matter?
