I have paid for an item and on my credit cars it gives the name of the place I bought it from then it has (via Paypal). When I do a dispute aearch it doesnt come up with the item purchased.

Were you trying to file a dispute for that particular transaction because you haven't received the item, right? It seems that you did Guest Checkout that's why it didn't appear on your PayPal Account's Activity. In this case,only our customer service representative can file a dispute for you. You won't have way to file a dispute on your end for Guest Checkout. Good thing about this transaction is that as long as you have active PayPal Account,you have PayPal Purchase Protection. To get in touch with our CSR please go to our official website and once you scroll down,you'll see "Contact" option. You can choose the available option to get a hold of a CSR because it may vary depending on your country/region.
