Contractor Defaulting

We signed a contract with a general contractor for a patio addition. He stated he charged a fee for us to pay through PayPal. We didn't want to pay cash so we accepted the fee. After changes to our start date due to weather, we haven't heard from him in over a week. We are now worried he is running with our money. Does PayPal step in to help with any of this?
