Was the payment completed OR unclaimed/pending with a cancel option?
Only if it was completed then paypal would have paid the seller upfront and then waited for the funds to transfer from your card. If you removed the card then paypal would come after you to pay them back as they already paid the seller.
IF it had completed it would have been better to have opened a dispute for the appropriate option in the resolution centre ie unauthorised or non receipt of item / not as described.
