Card reader software updates

 

Update: the software update that was announced on Monday May 23rd only applies to customers who are using the black PayPal Here Chip & PIN card reader with Contactless functionality. There will be no software update for the first generation white PayPal Here Chip & PIN card reader.

 

PayPal Here are committed to improving your experience with us and these improvements sometimes require us to perform necessary software upgrades on your card reader.

 

When a software update is available, you will not be able to take payments until you have updated your card reader.

 

The process shouldn’t take longer than a couple of minutes and we highly recommend you to use a Wi-Fi connection. Before you begin the update, please ensure that your mobile device and card reader are fully charged. While the update is in progress do not minimize the app or perform any other touch gestures on your mobile device.

 

Please follow these steps to start your update:

  1. Log into the PayPal Here App
  2. Connect your card reader
  3. Follow the prompts that will guide you through the software upgrade
  4. After this is complete you will be ready to make transactions again 

 

Troubleshooting

 

If you are unable to complete the software update or if the process is interrupted please terminate the PayPal Here app, restart it and try the update again.

 

If the update continues to fail, terminate the app and perform a factory reset on the card reader:

 

  1. Locate the small opening next to the power button on the Chip & PIN card reader
  2. Insert a pin into this opening.
    • For the Black Contactless Chip & PIN card reader, hold it until you see a message on the screen and choose Option “3. Total factory reset” in the Revive Menu
    • For the White Chip & PIN card reader push the pin in the opening for 10 seconds until the green triangle starts flashing and the first asterisk LED lights up yellow
  3. The card reader will take about a minute to restart
  4. Once the Bluetooth light starts flashing, pair the card reader to your smartphone or iPad and open the PayPal Here app, then initiate the software update again

Apologies for any inconvenience and confusion here. 

 

In regards to the issues you experienced on the 8th of May, would you have been using the reader with no issues in the weeks running up to this date? 

 

In general we always recommend to perform the update over WiFi. Using the mobile network can lead to errors if connectivity is poor so this sounds to be the reason you were unable to complete this I am afraid.

Have followed the instrctions- card reader says 'Software Update Required' and nothing else happens!!

 

How do I get the update installed?

I couldn't find anywhere mention what are the updates in this release? What do i expect to be fixed?

i.e. Battery life. connectivities ???.

Tried doing the update - got the message on the reader that said update available and nothing happened.  Did a reset on the chip reader per the directions in the thread, and now my iPhone doesn't recognize the reader (says connection unsuccessful) and won't enable the bluetooth connection - what do I have to do to fix this mess?  $149 reader is useless now - could I get some help, please?

Attempted to connect using my son's iPad - same result, got Connection Unsuccessful - anyone else running into this problem?

Did one more card reader reset, and this time before attempting to connect via bluetooth I cleared the chip reader off the iPhone menu, then fired up the Paypal Here app.  This time the phone recognized the chip reader and finally connected.  Update appeared on my iPhone and is downloading now - just got a notice that the update is finished.

 

Looks like if you're having trouble with your phone recognizing the chip reader, clear off the chip reader from your iPhone's bluetooth device list first and try again.

Same thing happened to me. Had to clear the reader off the ipad bluetooth menu, let it find it again and click on the new one to get it to pair. Everything worked after that. This should be mentioned in the troubleshooting instructions.

 ..I am about to scream...I have the black type of card teader...my paypal here app keeps saying install update...I click install updat & it says every time Paypal here isnt responding close app - wait - send feedback.. 

I have tried 3 times to factory mode it all & unistall the paypal here app...reinstall etc etc...the app will not install any updates...tomorrow I will really need the card reader & I am getting more & more frustrated...any tips..?
