I currently have no money in my bank account and have no credit balance on my paypal account. However, an annual subsciption (that I'd forgotten about) had been paid £20 or so. How could that be possible? My bank balance shows I'm not overdrawn. So why did that payment not fail? I have no other method of payment linked to my paypal.

When you pay someone it is never instant > paypal CREDIT the seller and then paypal take the wait for your funds to process from your funding source.
If that funding source fails they try again a few days later and then they try your back up funding source.
If that all fails then your paypal account can be limited and put into negative balance until you reimburse paypal.
