Do I need a credit card to make my first purchase with PayPal?

I’ve got sent some money to my PayPal account, and I want to use it to buy something online. But will it ask for a credit card when I make my first purchase?

Varies dependent on transaction.

But at some time you will have to add one and a bank account.
