error message: invoice has already been paid

I have two customers who buy the same service on my website. They have both told me they receive an error message that tells them the invoice has already been paid. I realize this may be a setting on my end that isn’t allowing the invoice number to change. I can’t figure out where that is though or how to change it. Can anyone help me? Thanks.
