My Gmail email address has a few periods in it (drew.r.) My client recently sent an invoice, however, the email they used didn't contain any of the periods (drewr)
After doing some digging I found out that Gmail doesn't care if the address has dots in it, as long as the letters are the same you'll still receive the email. So I did receive a notification saying that I had money waiting in my PayPal account. However, when I follow the link to PayPal, there is no money there.
I've gone into my PayPal settings and added the second version of my email (without any punctuation). However, when going back and following the original invoice link, I'm still out of luck!
