California Sales Taxes

Hi,

It is my understanding that California Tax Laws have changed such that PURCHASES

made on the internet are subject to Ca sales tax.

  1) Is that true?  If yes does it apply to all purchases, purchases only from other

states in the US, or what?

  2) If it is true - is PayPal going to "handle it" for me (the way a retail business does) ...

or am I expected to track it and pay it myself when filing at the end of the year?

If I'm expected to handle it ... I have to again ask "all purchases?" ...

It would be best to check with your State direct or a professional tax advisor in your State as any advice from the public user community may be misleading or simply wrong.   As for your second question, PayPal "only" provides the tools necessary for you to collect sales tax - however, it's up to you how or if you choose to implement those features.

Greengear,

I don't need to know whether or not I have to PAY sales tax for items

purchased online from non-California states.  I do.  The California tax

laws changed so this is now required for anyone living in California.

What I'm asking PayPal to do is to do the same kind of thing they

are doing for purchases from California sellers - collect and deal

with it.  If I go to a retail store they collect the necessary taxes.

If I use PayPal for an item being sold from California PayPal

collects the tax ... and sends that tax to the state.

What I'm asking PayPal is "when are you going to start

collecting this type of sales tax?".

There is no other way - that I know of - for me to raise

this question "directly to PayPal".  All of the links on

the PayPal pages go to this community.

                                                                     - Jim

Thanks for a better clarification of your concerns - perhaps a moderator can assist.   The majority of the folks that help here are just business people who use PayPal.
