Hosted PayPal Payments Standard Button Image Testing

Beginning October 9th, 2012 we will be testing new versions of the hosted PayPal Payments Standard button images, beginning with the Buy Now button images. We will be performing small size tests on an ongoing basis to ensure that our buttons are consistently optimized for best payment results.

What is the goal of the testing?

The goal of the button image testing is to ensure that the hosted button images available to merchants are proven to yield the highest conversion rates possible.  For example, if we find that button image A consistently yields higher conversion rates than button image B across various merchant websites, we will limit or remove button image B from the library of available images.

How will customers be chosen for testing? What will the change look like?

The test is being determined based on the consumer, not the merchant.  A consumer will see the same button image at a specific merchant site for the duration of the test, as well as the same button for other merchant sites, as long as the consumer does not clear their cookies.  Different users may see different buttons images on a single merchant site, but the button image a single user sees will be consistent across merchants for the duration of the test.

What merchants are impacted?

The testing will be completed on hosted PayPal button images in English within the US & Canada. Therefore, US and Canada based merchants utilizing PayPal Payment Standard buttons with hosted PayPal images may be affected.

Can a merchant opt-out of these tests?

No. Because the testing is being determined based on the consumer and not the merchant, the merchant may not opt out of testing.

Do merchants and partners have to do anything?

Partners and Merchants do not have to do anything to support this testing.
