Extra dollar charge

Hi

As I create an account with PayPal to purchase items from WalMart.com I noticed an extra $1 charge to my card. Is this normal? If so, will I be refunded this dollar or will it charge me a dollar for everytime I actually shop online using PayPal??

BritLev,

The $1.00 charge is what is known as a "preauthorization" or "verification" charge.  In order for a merchant to ensure that your card information is correct, they have to charge the card.

The most unobtrusive way to do so is to charge only a single dollar to verify that the billing information is correct.

This charge is not permanent and should drop off within a short period of time.  Your bank/card issuer may even be able to remove it earlier if you ask them (especially since they should see another charge from the same merchant for the actual purchase).

Hope this helps,

Adrian
