Why can't another country make payments to my uk paypal

I have friends in America and when they try to make a payment to my paypal account it won't allow them? You can buy from different countries so why can't they transfer money? Thanks

Are they receiving any particular on-screen error messages when they try this? Payments from America shouldn't be an issue, especially as PayPal is an American country

Are they sending you dollars or sterling payments?

If dollars then do you have your paypal account set up to receive dollars?

I got it eventually altho PayPal take so much off for converting? And 1 of my friends can not use his prepaid Mastercard to send? I have read comments regarding this and PayPal is happy to take the money but not pay it out! :s
