Fake Bank Account added to my Paypal.....

Hi everyone,

The other day I tranferred £40 from my Paypal to my account with the Royal Bank...

At least, that's what I thought I had done...and then I noticed that there were two bank account numbers and that the one I had transferred to wasn't my bank account, but had been set up as the default account....I ahve no recollection of ever having set up this account!

I double checked at my loacal bank to make sure I had no other accounts in my name, as Paypal states that this other account is linked to Ewen Kirk at the Royal Bank..

They told me that although I had set up a business account a few years back, this has been closed for a while and can't receive tranfers, and also has a different account number from the one on the profile, meaning that the only account in my name is my proper bank account...If the money had been sent to my old account, it would also have bounced back to Paypal, but it hasn't, meaning that somehow this account has been added to my Paypal without my knowledge....

What's odd here is that no-one attempted to take any funds from my Paypal, or my bank, and just waited until I tried to transfer money, perhaps knowing that I would expect it to go into my proper account...

So, does anybody have any idea who to contact at Paypal in order to see if I can somehow recover this £40 and talk with about this other random bank account, and if it's likely to be successful, or if I'm better just deleting the account from my profile, and chalking it up to one for to be wary of in future.....

Hello,

just read your post and i have same problem, except I spotted before I sent the money to the scam account.

Did you manage to delete that scam account as although Paypal help instructs to do this, when I click on the scam account (APS Financial) it does not give me the suggested option to remove it, so it seems stuck there.

Also, did you manage to report it to paypal ? I am staggered that people seem to be able to hack into your paypal account, set up a fake bank account to which you may send your money, seemingly protect it from deletion unless i am doing something wrong, and there seems to be no way to accually notify paypal that your account is hacked in this manner and get help.

I am just hoping now that although sent to my correct bank account, will it actually get there or can they have also changed something there ??

Cheers

Hi @deadpan666 and @NST,

Welcome to the community forum and thanks for posting.
So sorry to hear this.

If you think someone has accessed your account without your permission, you can report it.

If you can log in to your PayPal account:

  1. Go to the Resolution Centre.
  2. Click Dispute a Transaction (whether you have transactions to report or not).
  3. If you do have unauthorised transactions to report:
    • Click on the circle to the left of the transaction date to select.
    • Repeat for each transaction you wish to report and then click Continue.
    • On the 'Report a problem' page, select 'Unauthorised transaction' and then click Continue.
  4. If you don’t have unauthorised transactions to report:
    • Click Continue.
    • On the 'Report a problem' page, select 'Unauthorised transaction' and then click Continue.
  5. Complete the 'Unauthorised transactions' report and click Continue.
  6. Check the box to show your information is correct and click Submit.
