Trying to add an email that is supposedly used already

I have been using my work email since 2014. I am retiring at the end of December. I went in to add my personal email account and it says that email is already in use. To my knowledge I do not have a second Paypal account. Now what? I must resolve this by the end of December. I Brown

why dont you try logging in with that email addr and see what happens?

you dont know the password,so Paypal will not let you login,but at least you know someone has the same email address

OK. That was a good suggestion. And of course, it's some random account I must have set up a long time ago. Totally inactive. Is there a way to combine these accounts or can I delete the one or what? Thank you.
