Customers not receiving order confirmation emails

Is there any explaination or remedy for some customers are not receiving order confirmation emails? I have verified this problem with a real order that a staffer placed. They paid using a credit card, entered their correct gmail address and it is not in their spam folder. They do receive other emails from PayPal marketing. So it's not like PayPal emails are not coming through.
