When I add a handling variable to a transaction the PayPal page displays the label "Shipping and handling:" There is no shipping costs for these transactions and the label just confuses the buyer. Is there a way to change the label to just "Handling"? Or, is there another html variable that can be passed that would have a name and value that I can use. Something like the select Option variables for a product.

Unfortunately that's the design and behaviour of the "handling" variable. The value of this variable always shows up under Shipping. There's no features or options to change any wording. The work around that most merchants use is to have a clear policy on your web page or verbiage with the item button that states you charge a "handling" fee and the amount will appear on the PayPal Checkout Screen under shipping.
There are other work arounds to include an addtional fee however, you would have to manually code your item button and utilize some custom scripting to manage the calculations. This is not something that can be done using the online button creator.
