Why is there American money in my account?

My Paypal balance is 0.77 USD 

I'm British, in Britain, and only purchased items on eBay from UK, using pounds. 

I don't know why I should have any balance as the funds are transferred from my bank account as needed for each purchse, 

never mind foreign money!

Can anyone help?

No idea, as no one here can see into your account and you said yourself that you've never dealt in foreign currency.  Convert it to GBP.

You can convert it by click PayPal Balance > Manage currencies

have you bought from US sellers?

could he have issued you a partial refund,say shipping?

Some US sellers list their items on both US and UK.
