Symantec VIP Access vs. Google Authenticator

Hello,

could you please explain to me, why only Symantec VIP Access is supported for 2-factor authentification. And why is VIP Access prefered instead of Google Authenticator?

I would like to use only one authentification tool and this would be Google Authenticator. This is because Google Authenticator is supported by more services (even Microsoft).

I would also like to use Google Authenticator instead of the Symantec VIP or SMS. Together with Yubikey NEO and their Yubico Authenticator it would become even more secure solution.

I don't even see the option for the Symantec app, just the SMS version.

The whole thing is open source so PayPal/ebay would not even have to pay licencing fees.
