Sending money to someone in another country as goods/services, how protected am I?

Long story short, I'm buying a collectible from someone in Italy and I'm in the USA.
I will be sending payment as Goods/Services and I will be paying the exchange rate and fees..
How protected am I? I do not know this seller and I'm wondering what happens if he disappears after payment is sent?
