Item marked as delivered but I do not have it (international delivery)

Any help would be appreciated. I've ordered a reasonably high-value (250 $ ?  to put it in US terms) item from the UK to be delivered in France. UK tracking shows it as delivered in France and the La Poste (French tracking site) shows it as 'distribue' from a location about 57 miles away from me - I do not have the item! It's obviously worrying both me and the seller and so wondered what would be the next step? Is he responsible? Am I? I've checked with the PO here and they mentioned a reclamation form, just annoyed as how can it be marked as delivered if it hasn't been? No signature online either. Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks.
