There are special PayPal rules for India residents. One of the rules is that you must link a bank account before you can accept payments. Use the following links to learn more about what you need to do to accept payments...

If you've confirmed your PayPal email address and your friend correctly spelled your email address, the payment should take no more than a few minutes to appear in your PayPal account.
Is the sent payment shown in your friend's PayPal account? If yes, what is the status of the payment? Does it have a cancel option?
Try sending a PayPal request money or invoice to your friend and have him send payment from the request money or invoice.

I would have thought that the default currency could not be changed and had to be the currency of your country??
If so then you should also add dollars as a receiving currency via clicking on the ">" icon next to balance > manage currencies.
