The bank in which I have an account linked to my paypal account was just acquired by a larger bank. All branches of my old bank are now part of the new bank, however my account number will remain the same. Do I have to remove my account linked to the old bank and then re-link my new bank even though the account number is not changing?

You should not have to change any of that. The routing and account number is still the same, so it would all attach to the same place.
If the routing number is changing for any reason then you would want to remove and re-attach, but that shouldn't happen.
