If you are sending a payment to a merchant then the merchant sometimes but not always will wait until you have used their services to actually process it and have it removed from your account. On the other hand if you are waiting for money to clear that has been sent to you then you are going to see the funds much faster by adding a tracking number to the transacction so that paypal can tract the package and then once the person receives the package they (paypal)  will know about it and clear the funds. If this doesn't help then just reply and I am going to do my best to write you back fast as possible

Well its actually just a personal payment sent to me by someone, not for any services or products or anything

Hi bdawson87, and welcome to the forums!

If someone sends you an eCheck payment, the funds have to clear from their bank before they can be made available to you. If the person sending the payment has a US account, that takes 3-5 business days through the ACH process. If the person has an account in a different country, the time frame may be more.

The great thing about Instant Transfer is that the receiver doesn't have to wait that 3-5 business days. When someone uses Instant Transfer as a funding method, PayPal pays the receiver up front and waits for reimbursement in the background when the funds finish clearing from the bank 3-5 business days later. To open up the Instant Transfer funding option for future transactions, the person sending you money would need to add and confirm a credit card on their account as a back-up funding source.

I hope this helps!
