How to know when "personal" transfers are complete?

Let's say I am having a yard sale (for example), and I tell PayPal-capable customers to use Send Money with the personal option (such that I pay no fee upon receipt). In order for the transfer to be instantaneous, so that I could look in my account and see that the money is safely arrived before handing over the sold item, what do I have to know about the Sender? That he/she is paying with a PayPal balance? That he/she is paying by debit card but not credit card? Or maybe I misunderstand and this is not a valid way of collecting instant payments (from PayPal-capable buyers). Please let me know.

If the item is for collection and not being posted then you will have no seller protection.

Cash on collection only is the way to go.

However if you accepted paypal then the gift option is free only if your buyer sends the payment from his bank account or paypal balance but its not free if he funds it with a debit or credit card.
