I am representing a business' PayPal account and sometimes we need to make a refund after a completed payment from a client. After the refund date has expired, I have been refunding them through the "Send money to friends or family" option. Is this the correct way for me as a business person, to refund money to a client, past the 30 days?

Why would you do that? You have up to 180 days to refund a buyer.
Advice is voluntary.

Sending money separate from the transaction is a seriously bad idea as it leaves the original transaction active and the buyer can file a dispute and get a refund on the transaction.
