How do email notifications for subscription billing work?

I can't find any documentation on what Paypal sends us (the business owner) or the customer when they have a subscription profile, but their card is declined or their subscription is about to end. How do I manage these email templates, or at least become aware of what they are?
I want to make sure people who are subscribed and expired have a chance to update their billing/payment information? Does an automatic email go out allowing this to be updated?
Thank you!

PayPal does not let you customize their email notifications but that does not keep you from making up your own templates to send out to subscribers whose subs are expiring/payment declined.
PayPal does notify the subscriber of a failed payment and the subscriber has to take action to update their funding sources in their Preapproved payment profile. PayPal also lets you specify how it should handle failed payments in the button code (see reattempt failed payment link below) or through the Recurring Payments Dashboard:
See this document for how failed recurring payments are handled:
Somewhere in between, you may send a reminder to your subscriber to update their funding source or resubscribe.
Hope this helps.
Kudos & Solved are greatly appreciated. 🙂
